A Safety Net for Static Websites

Static hosting is refreshingly simple: you upload files and they are served. The catch is that an upload replaces what was there. Overwrite the wrong folder, ship a build with a broken path, or let an integration push something odd, and the previous version of your website is gone unless you happened to keep a copy.

Backups close that gap without adding anything for you to run. How often are backups taken?

Once a day, automatically, for every website that has backups switched on. You can also take one yourself at any moment, which is handy right before a big change.

How many versions are kept?

The 30 most recent backups per website. Daily ones, the ones you take yourself, and the safety copy made before a restore all share those 30 slots, so the newest backup pushes out the oldest.

Can I stop a version from being rotated out?

Yes. Mark a backup as kept and it sits outside the rolling window, so it stays until you remove it yourself. Useful for a launch version or the state a client signed off on.

What happens to my live website when I restore?

The files in that backup replace what is currently being served. Before that happens, Static.app takes a backup of the current state, so if you restore the wrong version you can go straight back to where you were.

Can I see what is in a backup before restoring it?

Yes. Open any backup in a preview and browse it as a working website. Your live site keeps serving the current version the whole time, and you close the preview when you are done.

Can I download a backup?

Any backup can be downloaded as a single archive, so you always have the option of keeping your own copy or pulling one file out of it.

Which plans include backups?

Large plans come with backups for three websites at no extra cost. On any paid plan you can also switch backups on per website for $5 a month, with lower per-website pricing when you enable several at once.

What happens to my backups if I turn the add-on off?

New backups stop, but the ones you already have stay restorable and downloadable for 30 more days. Switch backups back on within that window and nothing is lost.

Do backups slow my website down?

No. Snapshots are taken by our infrastructure and written to separate storage. Nothing runs in your pages, and visitors are served exactly as they were before.
